Tutor Training
Tutor training is designed to quickly match a new tutor and student.
New tutors will be assigned a mentor who supports and initiates regular contact over the tutors' first 3-6 months. The level of knowledge tutors need to be effective is at least 8-12 hours of training. Most of the training is self-paced and should be completed during the first year or tutoring.

Before being matched to a student, the new tutor will:
-
Observe an established student/tutor session - about 1 hour
-
Complete Literacy Door County orientation with a Board Officer - about 1 hour

The Student-Tutor matching process is with a Student Intake Facilitator and includes a review of the proposed curriculum for the student and meeting with the student - about 1 hour.

After matching with a student, the new tutor will:
-
Begin weekly tutoring sessions with the new student
-
Be assigned a mentor for regular support and contact

Wisconsin Literacy
Wisconsin Literacy (www.wisconsinliteracy.com) provides a number of tutor training options. The ELL Introductory Training Series is highly recommended for new tutors and is available as a self-paced online course or a live 4-part series on Zoom. Wisconsin Literacy also offers additional training courses, both online and live through Zoom.

We encourage each tutor to develop their own tutoring style so they can provide their students individualized help and support.
